Mentality

Physical skills are only half of the battle. Confidence, thought processing, willingness to make mistakes as a path to growth, unshakeable self-belief, this is what separates athletes.

At Deus we create well rounded athletes by training the mind how to think about “failure”. We emphasize a mental focus on “visualizing what you want to happen” and bringing it into reality. We remove the negative connotation from the thought process in order to learn and flourish.

  • I was going to list bullet points but I want this to feel more personal. I’ve played soccer for a quarter century, 2000-present. I played rec ball, high school ball, and went D1 at Bowling Green State University. I lost my eligibility, went back to school at SFCC to regain eligibility. During this time I coached a U18 program in my free time, during a training session (on my actual birthday) I damaged a nerve and was never supposed to play again.

    After extensive rehab my nerve worked again enough to compete, so I relocated to St. Louis since its soccer city USA. I am still looking for opportunities to play, I coach because I love the game and plan to be around it as a player or coach until I can’t walk.

    During my extensive rehab I had to re learn things that had previously been ingrained in my brain, this time as an adult. I studied kinesiology, and psychology in college and during my rehab I learned how to apply both philosophies to get through a rough rehab, and rebuild.

    I take these concepts I learned through experience, and school, to help athletes learn quickly and efficiently. Along with sport skills we learn the mental aspect of getting better: having high expectations for performance without tearing ourselves down, using mental imagery to advance more quickly, the importance of self-talk when learning new concepts, setting goals, making mistakes with intention, becoming a mentality monster, etc.

    With these skills, our athletes are prepared to take on anything and have a foundation that will last a lifetime
